My girls have been involved with the Youth Symphony for two years — going into their third this fall. I was approached about providing photography for the organization’s new marketing materials, and of course I jumped at it. I just spent an afternoon during the ensembles’ rehearsals for the last concerts of the season. Just as I LOVE photographing dancers, music is very close to my heart. I love the atmosphere of the symphony — the sounds, the scene and the energy. I look forward to capturing more of it over the next year.

An old friend of mine was in town for the Art of the Car auto show at the Art Institute this past weekend. I photographed his car about a dozen years ago and ended up selling an image of the hood ornament for a journal cover. Here are a couple of hood ornament shots of his Packard from Sunday’s show.

Urban Farm tour

The Kansas City Urban Farm Tour was this past weekend and I volunteered at The Hoop Dog Studio Farm on Troost. Cathryn & Lori run the farm, raising chickens and growing a variety of fruits and vegetables. I couldn’t help but photograph the farm while I was there.

Back to my roots

A little tongue in cheek, maybe, but this photo was shot during a recent shoot for The Leaven – a publication I started shooting for almost 20 years ago and am now doing some work for again.

Once The Leaven publishes their story, I’ll share more photos from this shoot. In the meantime, go to 3rd and Richmond in KCK for a wonderfully interesting and delicious Farmer’s Market at 9:30am on Mondays.

Vacation Photos

This is the first year I went on vacation without my “real” camera. It was a tough decision, as I wasn’t sure what I would get with just my snappy and my camera phone. Well, score one for the camera phone! I used an app called “FX Camera” and set it on “Polaroid” to achieve the effects below. What fun and what great memories!

Snow

I’ve never been good at shooting in the snow. It’s not that I haven’t wanted to, it’s just that it’s cold and I am inherently lazy. But when I got home from getting my daughter from school on Friday, it was too much to pass up. The trees held the snow just so, and the sky was a perfect white, making a contrast that was amazing and beautiful. Plus, it was pretty warm!

Here’s what I came up with. I truly love the contrast of the black bark/white snow/white sky.

While this one is not tree-related, it still fits within the grouping for the same reason that I love the rest of the images – the contrast of the dark chains and seat with the white of the snow.
