KC Youth Symphony | Rehearsals

My girls have been involved with the Youth Symphony for two years — going into their third this fall. I was approached about providing photography for the organization’s new marketing materials, and of course I jumped at it. I just spent an afternoon during the ensembles’ rehearsals for the last concerts of the season. Just as I LOVE photographing dancers, music is very close to my heart. I love the atmosphere of the symphony — the sounds, the scene and the energy. I look forward to capturing more of it over the next year.

I love these girls. I’ve had the great fortune of photographing them for the past couple of years, and every time we get together it’s a lot of fun. As the temperatures currently hover around 100, the pool seems cool and refreshing. However, we shot this in early May — they had the heat cranked up in the pool and the swim session was fairly short. It was a tad chilly — hard to believe right now!

There’s something about this little girls that tugs at my heart. Most kids like me, almost instantly. She, however, is still reserved, even after my photographing her for a couple of years now. It takes a lot for her to open up, but when she does, it’s magical. Unfortunately, towards the beginning of the shoot (immediately after I shot picture number two, above), she took a pretty hard spill down the stairs. Then she was mad; boy, was she mad. Mad at her mom for letting her fall. Mad at me for making her vulnerable like that. I got another smile after that, but I’m not sure how. Next time, I’m bringing every trick I know. I’m going to get her on my side!

What a special pair of girls! I have to be honest — I was a little concerned when we started, as one of the sisters cried and cried and cried. As a mom of twins, I understand this challenge very well: when one child is “on” the other one is not, and vice versa. I’m assuming it’s the same way with non-twin siblings, but I have no idea. So, I had two goals: 1) capture each girl’s smile, and 2) get the girls together. I am happy to report that I accomplished both! Whew. Tough shoot. Super sweet girls. Really nice (and calm & patient) parents.
